Thompson Valley Eaglets Graduate to Become Full-Fledged Eagles

Seventeen new cadet members of the Thompson Valley Composite Squadron graduated from the Thompson Valley “Eaglet” Program on November 20th, 2008, to become full-fledged Thompson Valley Eagles. Colorado Wing Commander, Col Ed Phelka and Group 2 Commander, Maj Ryan Lord, attended the ceremonies and presented awards.

The TVCS Fall ‘08 Eaglet Program began with an Open House in September 2008. Nearly twenty prospective cadets and their parents attended presentations from the cadet leadership team, consisting of Maj Jenny Niswender (DCC), Capt Liz Caldwell (Activities and Moral Leadership), 1st Lt Brenda Kononen (Aerospace Education), 1st Lt Steve Schneider (Emergency Services), C/1st Lt Drew Harrison (Cadet Commander), and C/Capt Bob Kent (cool cadet stuff ambassador).

For two months the “Eaglets” were put through their paces by their Training Sergeants: C/MSgt Jordan Fisher and C/MSgt Callum Schneider. The “Eaglets” spent their Thursday evenings attending classes on topics such as Drill & Ceremonies, followership, Customs & Courtesies, physical fitness, CAP Core Values, and uniforms. By the 20th of November they were READY……

With lessons learned, tests passed, and drill practiced, 17 Eaglets formed up for inspection, joined by more than 30 of their fellow cadets. C/1Lt Harrison presented the command to Col Phelka who inspected the squadron and presented the Eaglet Program Graduates with their first stripes. The Eaglets had earned their wings as fully fledged Thompson Valley Eagles and proudly performed a Pass & Review in front of their peers, parents and invited guests, much to the delight of Col Phelka who observed that this was the first “Squadron Pass & Review” he’d seen!

Other highlights of the evening included presentation of the Grover Leoning Award to Maj Niswender, the Mitchell Award to C/2d Lt Constant, as well as promotions for C/TSgt MacVean and C/MSgt Schneider.
