Black Sheep in the News

The members of the Black Sheep Senior Squadron, a 100% volunteer organization, stand ready to perform "Missions For America" and Colorado.  Founded in 1984, as a Senior (Flying) Squadron, currently has over 60 active members, 18 years or older.
Designated CO-162, Black Sheep Senior Squadron, is assigned to Group 1, Denver Metro area, of the Colorado Wing, Rocky Mountain Region, Civil Air Patrol.
The Civil Air Patrol is a non-profit, benevolent Auxiliary of the United States Air Force. We train both aircrews and ground personnel to participate in Search and Rescue, Disaster Relief and Homeland Security missions throughout Colorado and out of state as needed.
In addition to aircrews, our squadron also trains people in important ground-based emergency service specialties generally following the Incident command system used by emergency response agencies nationwide.
For those that do not wish to fly, there are many administrative positions that need interested members.  But, accepting an administrative position does not prevent you from participating in our search and rescue activities.
Training is a high priority in this unit.  Besides our active flight and emergency services training, we have an extended Profession Development Training program that is normally required for promotion.
The promotion system is training based and follows the Air Force system.  Members are expected to wear either the Air Force or Civil Air Patrol Corporate uniform.
Being the only flying squadron in Group 1, we operate two Cessna 182 aircraft out of Centennial Airport (KAPA) and Buckley Air Force Base (KBKF).  Our current emphasis is on training and professional development.
One of our crews has been credited with a save on finding the two hikers lost in the Colorado mountains and one of our members went to Nevada to fly one of the CAP GA-8 aircraft with the Archer system installed, in support of the Fosset search.

In the 31 days of May 2008 alone, Colorado Wing, with the help of the Black Sheep Senior Squadron did all of the following:

1. Responded to 24 AFRCC missions.
2. Conducted 7 actual search-and-rescue missions.
3. Executed a large-scale search for a missing Cessna 310 in mountainous terrain.
4. Flew 37 air sorties and 12 ground sorties for search-and-rescue missions, totaling more than 95 flying hours and over 1251 driving miles.
5. 48 officers and 53 cadets responded to support disaster relief efforts following the EF3 tornado that cut a 35-mile-wide path in Weld County.
6. Tornado relief efforts accounted for 64 ground sorties and over 6068 miles driven.
7. Responded to two counties’ requests for other disaster relief sorties including flooding and landslide spotting.
8. Members flew 88 cadet orientation flight sorties.
9. CO Wing amassed 373.9 hours of flying, exceeding the highest total for the fiscal year to date by 69%
